Conventions of a Thriller - Individual

Response to Client Brief - Individual

Explanation of Demographics
The audience for our opening thriller film are 16-24 year olds from the UK who enjoy watching thriller films. We will ensure that our thriller appeals to our target audience by making the main character a similar age to the target audience and will also film the opening sequence in the UK. We will make sure that it includes several conventions of a film opening as well as conventions of the thriller genre such as low key lighting and suspenseful music. We will be able to gain advantages when making a thriller opening for this audience as a young audience will find the thriller genre very exciting as there is a lot of action and thrill. The challenges that may occur when making the thriller opening may be making sure that it engages and appeals to our target audience. This means we have to focus on aspects of our thriller opening such as characters, locations and narrative, to make sure it appeals to our target audience.

Conventions
We will include several thriller and opening sequence conventions in our thriller opening. The key conventions includes title, credits, low key lighting, suspenseful music and thriller themes. We will include the title at the end of our opening sequence to introduce the audience to the whole film. Credits of the directors and main actress will be shown at the bottom of the screen in the beginning of our opening sequence to inform the audience on who they are. Music will also be added throughout the opening sequence to create a suspenseful atmosphere and engage/thrill the audience. There will also be clear themes of the thriller genre identified in our opening sequence such as violence, kidnapping and escape. When editing our opening sequence we will make it look gloomy and frightening by making sure that there is low key lighting.

Industry Requirements
The institution that we are producing the thriller opening for is 'Thriller Chiller Film Festival' from Michigan, USA. This institution has featured action, sci-fi, horror and suspense films since 2006 at their international film festival each year. It states on their website that their movies are "made with bold determination and wild imagination. Movies made with vision and grit. Movies made when it was just about the fun of going to the movies." An advantage of working with this insitution is that they will feature our thriller opening sequence at their film festival in front of a large audience. The insitution also gives out awards for the best films. If we win an award, this will increase awareness of our film and will increase our target audience. However, a drawback of working with this institution is that only a small amount of people from Michigan attend this event, and therefore, it may not spread our film or give us a large amount of recognition. Another drawback of working with this institution is that they are based in America. This means we need to consider regulatory issues for both the UK and USA. In the UK, the film regulator is the BBFC who provide specific ratings based on aspects of the film and whether they are appropriate or not. Whereas, the american film regulator, MPAA, has a different rating system from the BBFC's. Therefore, it may be difficult for us to make the film a 15 in both countries.
My Insitutional text will include the name of the institution "Thriller Chiller Films" as well as the following:
